To meet the aquatic activity needs of our UC Davis students, the Department of Campus Recreation is renovating the Rec Pool with the aim to bring all department aquatic activities under one facility.
The renovation will include:
  • Recreation Pool (Seasonal)
    • Increased number of lap lanes
    • Shallow entry
    • Diving well
  • Competition Pool (Year-round)
    • Increased number of lap lanes
    • Six additional 25-yard lanes
    • Functional facility for various competitions
  • Sand volleyball court
  • Updated restroom
    • Increased number of facilities
    • Increased number of day lockers
    • Separate gender inclusive restroom and shower

Student fees will not increase to fund the expansion. The project is funded from FACE, SASI and SSF reserves as well as CRU income reserves.

Why renovate the Recreation Pool?

Aquatic facilities on campus are heavily utilized by various student and non-university groups. Campus Recreation programs such as Sport Clubs, Intramural Sports, Fitness and Wellness, Aquatics, Youth Programs and Informal Recreation are often competing for space and time at other campus pools. The renovation of the Rec Pool will bring all of Campus Recreation’s aquatic activities under one facility and allow for more dynamic usage and scheduling for our programmatic needs.

Additionally, the facility has long-term deferred maintenance issues that are beginning to become a significant burden to the department.

Tentative Timeline

The pool is closed as of September 29th, 2017 for the scheduled conclusion of the 2017 swim season.  The pool will remain closed until after the renovation, opening again in the summer of 2019.

The sequence of events will include:

  • September 29, 2017–Pool closes
  • Spring of 2018–Demolition begins
  • Summer of 2018–Construction begins
  • Summer of 2019–Pool opens

Please note that the schedule is subject to change.

Admission Changes

This project will be funded by student fee reserves. Upon reopening, the Rec Pool will be operated as a student-owned facility, directly in line with our other student-funded facilities (ARC, MU and Games Area). Students and members of Campus Recreation will be able to freely access the pool just as they are able to access the ARC. The public and greater community can access the pool by purchasing a Campus Recreation membership and enjoy all the benefits of being a member of the department. Community members may also purchase a day pass for access to the pool and ARC. When the pool opens, the newly expanded ARC will also be open, making Campus Recreation membership even more enticing.
