Self Defense

Self defense is a complex skill with many aspects.  In a practical defense situation, situational awareness and conflict resolution will almost always take precedence over physical conflict.  This course, however, isn't about resolving conflict.  It's about turning your body into a deadly weapon!

Our self defense small group training - taught by coach and former amateur MMA fighter Harry Stanley - provides an introduction to the athletic side of self defense.  New participants will gain proficiency in a tried and true system of stand-up striking, grappling, and movement derived from Muay Thai kickboxing and western MMA competition.  At the same time, we'll work to develop the underlying athletic capacities of agility, speed, endurance necessary for effective combat.

While some students find training in striking and grappling exciting, others may feel intimidated; both sorts are encouraged to check it out!  Training in a martial art or system of self defense is as much an emotional exploration as it is an athletic endeavor; this course is an opportunity to explore and cultivate both aspects of ourselves in tandem.

This course does include light contact between partners, but is very safe and does not include sparring or direct competition.  No equipment nor experience is required - only a desire to train!
